Kiosk Mode

Kiosk Mode transforms a POS terminal into a self-service ordering station. Customers browse your menu, customize items, and check out on a dedicated screen with a large-touch layout designed for public use.

Setup

Kiosk Mode is enabled per-terminal. The same terminal can operate in standard staff mode one day and kiosk mode the next — it's just a toggle.

  1. Go to Settings > POS Devices and open the terminal you want to use as a kiosk.
  2. Toggle on Kiosk Mode.
  3. Set Kiosk Sidebar Width (in pixels, default 345). This controls the width of the sidebar that holds menu categories and the checkout area while the customer browses.
  4. Save the terminal settings.

You also need at least one service type (order type) marked for kiosk use:

  1. Go to Settings > Transactions > Service Types and open the service type customers should order under (e.g., "Dine-In" or "Counter Service").
  2. Toggle on KIOSK Order.
  3. Save.

When the terminal is opened with Kiosk Mode enabled, the display menu loads as the home screen and the kiosk experience takes over.

How It Works

When a customer interacts with the kiosk, the flow follows these steps:

The menu displays with a dark sidebar on the left containing top-level menu tabs and a scrollable category list with item counts. The main content area shows product cards in a two-column grid. Each card displays the item photo, name, description, price, and a button that reads either Customize (for items with modifiers) or Add (for items that go straight to the order).

Customers scroll through all categories in a single continuous page. The sidebar highlights the category currently in view.

Item Customization

When a customer selects Customize on an item with modifiers (e.g., a smoothie with fruit and milk choices), the screen switches to a step-by-step prompt flow:

  • One modifier group per screen (e.g., "Choose your milk" then "Choose your fruits").
  • A step rail at the top shows progress through the groups.
  • Options are displayed as large touch-friendly tiles with images.
  • Required groups block progress until satisfied.
  • A summary panel on the right shows all selections with quantities, prices, and a running total.
  • The final step shows Add to Order to complete the customization.

Cart and Checkout

The order summary appears in the sidebar with sub-total, tax, total, and item count. A Checkout button opens the payment screen.

On the payment screen, the customer can pay by credit/debit card (terminal-based EMV reader) or manual card entry. After payment completes, the customer can email a receipt or clear the screen to start a new transaction.

Idle Timeout

Unlike staff terminals that log out after idle time, a kiosk terminal doesn't sign out — there's no user account. Instead, the configured idle timer will clear the current order and return the customer to the menu home screen, ready for the next person.

What Changes in Kiosk Mode

Compared to the standard staff-facing experience:

  • Header chrome — The search menu, orders button, site selector, and edit cart buttons are hidden from the top toolbar. The sign-in/sign-out area is simplified.
  • Electron menu bar — On Electron (desktop) kiosk terminals, the File/Edit/View/Window menu bar is hidden so customers can't access app-level controls like quit or developer tools.
  • Page footer — The site footer that normally appears at the bottom of the page is hidden to keep the kiosk layout full-screen.
  • Prompt walkthrough — Item modifier prompts use the dedicated kiosk layout (large tiles, step rail, summary panel) instead of the standard chip-based layout.
  • Display menu — Menu pages use the dark-sidebar layout with product cards and a bottom action bar instead of the standard list view.
  • Payment screens — EMV card payment screens use large touch-friendly buttons with a customer-facing header showing payment amount, order total, and balance due.

Restricting Payment Methods for Kiosk Terminals

Not every payment method should be exposed to customers on a self-service kiosk. You can control which payment methods appear on kiosk terminals:

  1. Go to Settings > Transactions > Payment Methods and open the payment method you want to configure.
  2. Check Kiosk Payment to make this method available on kiosk terminals.
  3. Uncheck Kiosk Payment to hide this method from kiosk terminals (it remains available for staff terminals).
  4. Save the payment method.

Only payment methods with the Kiosk Payment checkbox enabled will appear on the kiosk payment screen. Use this to restrict methods like cash refunds, manager-approved tenders, or internal accounts from the customer-facing screen.
