Gift Cards — Overview

Gift cards are a store credit item that customers purchase and then use to pay for future orders. They are issued as catalog items, added to a sales order, and paid for like any other product.

How Gift Cards Work

  1. A gift card item is created in the product catalog with the Gift Card item type.
  2. The cashier adds the gift card item to the customer's order.
  3. The cashier enters the card value and registers the physical card (swipe or generated code).
  4. The customer pays for the gift card like any other order.
  5. The customer can apply the gift card balance at checkout on future purchases.

Item Type Setup

Before issuing gift cards, you must have the Gift Card item type configured.

  1. Go to Settings → Product & Item Catalog → Item Types.
  2. Find the Gift Card item type (default type: store credit, use type: adjustment).
  3. Verify the item type is enabled.

Creating a Gift Card Catalog Item

  1. Go to your product catalog.
  2. Create a new item or edit an existing item for gift cards.
  3. Set the Item Type to Gift Card.
  4. Optionally assign a barcode for scanning at the register.
  5. Save the item.

The item type must be set to Gift Card for the issue dialog to appear when the item is added to an order.

Issuing a Gift Card

When a Gift Card item is added to an order (by menu selection or barcode scan), the Issue Credit dialog opens:

  • The item's price is used as the default card value.
  • Enter or swipe the physical gift card to register it.
  • Use Change Value to adjust the card amount before payment.
  • Use Issue Code to generate a random card code (if enabled in settings).
  • Complete payment on the order — the gift card is activated when the order is paid.

Using a Gift Card

At checkout, the Gift Card button allows the customer to apply their gift card balance to the order. If the gift card balance equals the order total, the button label shows Gift Card Balance.
