Zebra Scanner COM-Port Setup
This page covers one task: setting a Zebra barcode scanner to COM-port mode so Pointless can read it directly. For where scans go in the app, see Barcode Scanners.
What to Download
- 123Scan Utility — Zebra's free configuration tool for Windows
- Zebra scanner support downloads — pick your scanner model for its manual
No driver is needed on Windows 10 or later.
Setting
In 123Scan:
| Where | Setting | Value |
|---|---|---|
| USB tab → Basic Settings | USB Device Type | CDC |
Leave everything else as it is.
Steps
- Install and open 123Scan.
- Plug the scanner into the PC with its USB cable and let 123Scan detect it.
- On the USB tab, under Basic Settings, set USB Device Type to CDC.
- Write the configuration to the scanner.
- In Pointless, turn on COM Barcode Scanner for the terminal (Settings → POS List → [Terminal]) and log in again.
- The first time on a terminal, press Connect (see Connecting and Disconnecting).
- Scan a product barcode to confirm. A USB icon next to the product search box shows the scanner is connected and receiving scans.
note
123Scan only detects scanners bought through Zebra's authorized channels. A scanner bought on a public marketplace may not be recognized. In that case, have 123Scan print a sheet of programming barcodes and scan the CDC barcode from it.
Going Back to Keyboard Mode
Set USB Device Type back to USB HID Keyboard and turn off COM Barcode Scanner on the terminal.
